There’s going to be quite a few fictional witches from years’ past coming back to our TV screens in the next several months. The Charmed reboot hits The CW on Sunday, October 14, and the first season of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (aka the dark version of Sabrina the Teenage Witch) will be making its way onto Netflix just in time for Halloween.

Now, it’s being reported that Samantha Stephens is coming back to the small screen as well for a Bewitched reboot on ABC. Although the new Sabrina has fans excited for its debut (probably because it’s connected to cult-favorite TV show Riverdale), the announcement of a new Charmed garnered much more mixed reviews – both from the original fans and OG castmembers. It appears that the reaction to a modern-day Bewitched is closer to that from Charmed fans.

The Twitterverse has spoken out and they are strictly anti-Bewitched. It’s not hard to see why. This is one of many, many, many reboots/revivals in the works recently (Veronica Mars‘ revival was just announced earlier this week) – and isn’t there something to be said for, you know, originality? Furthermore, the decision to have the show as a “diversity reboot” with an interracial couple as the leading witch and her traditional husband has proven to be controversial, as well. Not because fans don’t want to see more people of color on-screen (trust me, we do!), but because having the main love interest remain as a white man is still a little too traditional for modern tastes. Especially if we’re trying to put a new spin on an old idea.

You can check out some of the hottest takes on the Bewitched reboot below:

I would be for the #bewitched reboot if it wasn’t for the “black single mother” trope and having her date a white man. I’m not against interracial relationships but come on, can black men be love interests for once?

So they’re rebooting #Bewitched centered around an interracial couple. I’ll say this, if they do it, they need to look into casting Asian, Latinx and other types of ethnic leads. We have enough Black and White interracial media, let’s get new narratives and perspectives.
